The building follows the urban framework set by the Bairro de Alvalade masterplan and was part of a 1940s major development originally aimed at providing affordable rental homes for working class families. No demolitions have been carried out. Instead, the design creates a set of interiors attentive to the apartment's original qualities. The floor plan has allowed for the addition of a shower room and a closet while keeping the existing internal layout. Central to the space is a rotated four-wall structure that acts as an anchor point around which four exhibition areas are arranged. This structure was constructed out of existing self standing metal mesh screens which were assembled and clad in valchromat to provide surfaces for text and images. The objects were thematically gathered onto clusters of specially designed modular black valchromat plinths. The use of black valchromat throughout aimed at providing visual unity to an otherwise heterogeneous set of objects and display devices. The flats are designed to accommodate the fluid&nbsp;nature of contemporary households. They&nbsp;have full width projecting balconies as an extension of the internal spaces which are thus also connected externally. The building emanates a sense of modernist abstraction but its relationship to the surrounding constructions and proposed streetscape is intended to be attentive and purposeful. The rear garden courtyard can be entered from the street via passages through the building's ground floor and is permeated by the community functions, such as laundrette, workshop, multi-purpose hall and library. The shared vegetable garden and orchard contribute&nbsp;further&nbsp;to the fostering of a sense of neighbourliness. The main structure is reinforced concrete, with the outer façades and balconies made in white and grey precast concrete components. The columns of turquoise precast concrete add an ornamental character to the composition and give the building a scale and detail that is appropriate to the proportions of the street. The design prioritizes the use of low maintenance materials, the repetition of standard components, as well as off-site prefabrication. It is currently occupied by the remains of a former agricultural warehouse. The area was consolidated throughout the first half of the twentieth century as Lisbon's industrial expansion reclaimed extensive stretches of land from the river Tagus. The industrial heritage is present in prominent industrial buildings and structures, including two monumental concrete silos that stand out to the South and the East of the site. The new residential building provides twenty four affordable rent apartments. On the top floors, dual aspect two-bedroom flats run from East to West. Three-bedroom apartments are located at both ends of the building. On the upper ground floor, East facing one-bedroom apartments look out onto a landscaped roof over the semi basement car park. The building entrances are interspersed by commercial units at ground floor level. A series of generous loggias are built into the façade as an extension of the internal living spaces. Drawing on the neighbouring industrial structures, the consistent rhythm of light grey precast concrete piers holds the continuous balconies. This vertical rhythm is extended throughout the building's precast concrete cladding and the spacing of Juliet balconies on the eastern façade. The horizontal lines tie the composition together as a whole. The building's location within the plot seeks to maximize the distance from the housing units to the site's eastern boundary. The proposed stepped landscape and vegetation aim to provide further buffering from the overwhelming presence of road, railway and industrial infrastructure. At the northern end a public square provides an anchor point onto which a diversity of fluxes converge.&nbsp; Cost effective construction methodologies based upon modular repetition and typification of building components are sought. Structurally the building combines a reinforced concrete frame with precast concrete components. The existing 75m² property is part of a block of apartments built in the early 2000s and has had, over the years, multiple occupants on a rental basis. The stone clad building has a reinforced concrete frame structure, with hollow brick masonry walls, both internal and external. The interiors are composed of plastered walls and ceilings, and display elements of pastiche ornamentation such as plaster cornices, as commonly found in buildings of that period. The apparent divergence between spatial layout and structural grid reveals the location of multiple structural elements expressed as downstand beams, wall recesses and protruding columns. Such elements have been left untouched, as remnants of the original spatial complexity. Existing elements in&nbsp;good&nbsp;condition have been retained, including toilets, door ironmongery and existing&nbsp;kitchen which is to be upgraded at a later&nbsp;stage. New light fittings have been introduced throughout. The intervention is based upon the careful setting out of the strictly necessary standard off-the-shelf components, as well as the use of traditional construction techniques. This aims to respond effectively to budget and time constraints. Readily available materials and an elemental tonal range have been adopted to create a soft harmonious atmosphere. Ceramic, mirror and painted surfaces come together through subtle variations in texture. Previous renovation works and a rear addition to the main house had left the garden in a state of disrepair. This was home to an artist looking to expand their studio space outdoors and create a new landscape to be explored as a living backdrop for work-in-progress artwork. The pavilion is flexible in its use as a studio, a workshop and an informal exhibition space within the garden setting. It sits in the corner to the west of the rear garden gate defining a winding path that delays the moment of arrival at the house. Our approach was to engage with the tradition of timber garden buildings and explore the connections between the various elements that compose the new garden - landscape, vegetation, fences - to create a harmonious whole. It frames the landscape it sits within as well as the repetition of the brick terrace and its butterfly roofs. The vertical larch panels articulate the different components at play by cladding the pavilion, offering a backdrop to the pyracantha tree and providing a new face to the existing party fence. This continuous gesture accommodates the pavilion openings and a new planter, setting a datum on which the roof sits. The latter is expressed through an aluminium fascia and a fine protrusion that harmonizes the sense of height throughout. The elemental character of the garden is emphasized by the minimal palette of materials which are applied respectfully to their natural appearance. Australian landscape. The desert-like walled enclosure, analogous to Australia’s interior creates an environment in bold contrast to the green manicured lawns and deciduous trees of the garden.The architecture consists of primitive red walls, the depth of ancient buildings, delineating a series of courtyards, punctured by small openings allowing peaking views to and from the gardens. Contained within this environment is a sparse desert-scape interspersed sparingly with native species such as the Kangaroo Paw, Bottle Brush and Grevillea. At the centre of the ruin is a primordial shelter, a space for seating, with filtered light, some enclosure and views to the landscape. It draws upon the role of the ruin as romanticised in the Enlightenment period, portrayed in majestic structures in harmony with nature as well as the abstract ephemeral nature of the ruin in Metaphysical poetry. It is also intended to concentrate the essence of the Australian interior and promote awareness to native planting and landscapes, as well as sustainable building methods. The Ruin is built using materials that are sustainable, lightweight and low cost. The walls are constructed using hay bales laid in running bond and lightly rendered with natural lime render and red ochre pigment to ensure resistance to fire, pests and decay. The footings, planters and capping’s are simple reclaimed timber ladder frames filled with gravel and tied together by high tensile wire. Timber studs with a diagonal prop provide added rigidity and strength between the wall and the footing and a thin corten cap to the walls ensures they are protected from water ingress from above. The roof is post and beam timber construction with a recycled polycarbonate sheeting that provides insulation and UV protection as well as protecting both the users and the hay from the rain. The plinths acted as anchor points, assuming multiple possible positions within the gallery space. Their angular shapes allowed for unexpected forms of interaction by the performers. Two benches completed the set by providing informal viewing points towards the video projections. The plinths and benches were designed to be made with a small number of tools and without specialist skills. The components were cut out of two 18mm plywood sheets and assembled with screws and glue. Two L-shaped classroom wings flank a central courtyard along the East-West axis. This arrangement is preferred to mitigate the exposure of the main elevations to the extreme heat. The entrance is located at the West end of the courtyard. On the East end, as an extension of the shaded surface provided by the tree, a covered shuttered area provides space for the canteen and other collective activities. In close reference to local vernacular typologies the courtyard becomes the place of gathering, play, dining as well as providing the ground for vegetable growing. The embracing colonnade provides a sheltered transitional space between the classrooms and the open courtyard contributing to an intimate and communal atmosphere. This system allows for the timber structural frame to lift the roof above the perimeter walls - thus creating a ventilation gap between roof and ceiling - whilst reinforcing the mud brick walls through the use of horizontal wooden ties. Additionally there is the aim to add to the local tradition of mud brick making by including a minimal amount of stabiliser (cement) in the earth mix. A final coating of lime plaster offers the walls further protection from the elements. The plot is elongated and narrow, sitting approximately half a storey below road level. A fireplace takes centre stage in an open ground floor living area connecting front and back gardens. A set of concrete walls establishes spatial hierarchies longitudinally along the terrain. Above, the privacy of the bedrooms spills out onto shared balconies that provide views across the surrounding landscape.
