DEI Exhibition

‘Três Eméritos e o DEI’ was an exhibition curated by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (DEI) at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) in Lisbon. It celebrated the history of DEI and its co-founders through a series of historic objects and photos, video interviews and texts, which were displayed in the main hall of the university's 1930s building.

The exhibition design sought to explore the perimeter permeability and visible geometry of the hall as means to hierarchise the diverse multimedia material being showcased. Central to the space is a rotated four-wall structure that acts as an anchor point around which four exhibition areas are arranged. This structure was constructed out of existing self standing metal mesh screens which were assembled and clad in valchromat to provide surfaces for text and images. The objects were thematically gathered onto clusters of specially designed modular black valchromat plinths. The use of black valchromat throughout aimed at providing visual unity to an otherwise heterogeneous set of objects and display devices. All custom made furniture and cladding panels were designed to allow for their post exhibition reuse.
